CORNWALL, Pa. (WHTM) -

A tractor-trailer driver caused thousands of dollars in damage to a historic building on the Cornwall Manor campus this morning before fleeing the scene, according to police.

Cornwall Police Chief Bruce Harris said staff members saw the truck backing up on Rexmont Road as the driver tried to turn around because of a road closure at the Snitz Creek bridge.

The trailer struck the roof of the Paymaster's Building, damaging the slate roof and wooden lattice work and tearing a hold in the roof or side of the trailer, Harris said in a news release.

The truck then knocked over a sign at the Cornwall Manor Food Center and turned around by driving over the grass at Cornwall Iron Furnace, Harris said.

Witnesses reported seeing "Trans Am" on the trailer, which left a trail of foam insulation at the scene due to the tear in its skin, police said.

Harris said the Paymaster's Building was built around 1860 and served as an office for the Cornwall Iron Company. It is currently used as an artist studio by Cornwall Manor.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is asked to call Cornwall police at (717) 274-2071.
