GREENCASTLE, Pa. (WHTM) -
First, it was the Labor and Industry building in Harrisburg and, now, bed bugs are popping up in Franklin County homes. It's an issue that experts say could happen to any family in the midstate.
Exterminators with Pest Patrol are currently treating one of the worst outbreaks of bed bugs they have ever seen in the borough of Greencastle.
"This is a very extreme case," said Marshal Gilbert of Pest Patrol, "Most places aren't this bad or this spread out."
Inside one home, the bed bugs have spread from mattresses, to couches, to carpets and are even in the walls. They spread from room to room by latching onto people.
"They are hitch-hiker insects, that is how they move from point A to point B," explained Kevin Tharp of Pest Patrol.
He said the pests are all over the midstate region so getting them into your home isn't difficult. He explained that it can be as easy as sitting in the same chair at a movie theater as someone who has bed bugs at their home.
Tharp advises people to line their clothes hampers with plastic trash bags, and to leave shoes in the garage or mud room. He also stresses that families should get an inspection if they think there is a problem because bed bugs multiply very quickly.
Tharp said his Pest Patrol service will go to homes across the mid-state region. For more information you can call 1-866-PEST-MAN.
