Crime decreases in Pa. by nearly 1%

Crime in Pennsylvania was down by nearly one percent last year, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan announced Tuesday.

Overall the number of reported crimes decreased by .7 percent while violent crime declined by .9 percent, bringing it to the lowest level since 2003.

But Noonan cautioned that just because numbers are down doesn't mean the public should let their guard down.

"We must continue to remember that each crime represents a victim whose freedoms must be protected," he said.

The total number of crimes reported to state police in 2011 was 927,271, compared to 934,248 in 2010. More specifically, there were fewer murders, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults and arsons in 2011 while thefts and burglaries increased.
