HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A new poll shows President Barack Obama has a 12-point lead over Republican nominee Mitt Romney among Pennsylvania voters.

The poll released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University, CBS News, and the New York Times indicates 54 percent of voters in the state back Obama, while 42 percent plan to vote for Romney.

Pennsylvania women back Obama 58 to 37 percent, while men split with 49 percent for Romney and 48 percent for the president. Independent voters are split 48-48 percent, the poll found.

Respondents likely to vote said Obama cares about their needs and problems, 60-37 percent, while Romney doesn't care, 57-38 percent. Nearly 60 percent of voters said Romney's policies would favor the rich.

The poll also found that Obama leads Romney in two other key battleground states; 53 percent to 43 percent in Ohio and 53 percent to 44 percent in Florida.

In Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate race, the poll found Democratic incumbent Sen. Robert Casey Jr. leads businessman Tom Smith, the Republican challenger, 49-43 percent.

The telephone survey of 1,180 likely voters was conducted from September 18-24 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percent.
