MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
A former Mechanicsburg funeral director has been charged with taking money from more than a hundred customers who paid for their arrangements in advance.
Boyd Lee Myers Jr., 51, was arraigned Wednesday on 558 criminal charges, including 165 felony counts of deceptive business practices, theft, and insurance fraud.
Myers immediately waived his preliminary hearing before District Judge Donald Howell, who set bail at $200,000 unsecured and scheduled a formal arraignment in Cumberland County court for December 27.
Myers' attorney, Karl Rominger, said his client is interested in resolving the case.
"It looks like nobody is out financially at the end of the day and I think that is the most important thing," Rominger told abc27 News.
Cumberland County District Attorney Dave Freed said Myers no longer has anything to do with the funeral home profession and has no affiliation with his former business, which is now known as the Myers-Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory.
Freed added that the current funeral home has been assisting authorities in the investigation and affected client families.
The Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association issued a statement that said it fully supports the criminal charges against Myers.
"Funeral directors who violate the public trust should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," the statement read. "When funeral directors breach the public trust, it casts a negative shadow on all funeral directors around the state."
