CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Chambersburg police have charged a suspect in the killing of an 18-year-old borough man last week.

Steffawn Spriggs, 23, of no fixed address, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and related crimes in the September 17 shooting death of Calvin Beam, according to Chambersburg police. They say Spriggs could have ties to a gang.

Police officials say Bean's death is an awful case and they are happy to finally have some kind of closure.

Spriggs was already being held in the Camp Hill state prison for slipping away from a halfway house in Harrisburg in July, police said. He was taken into custody two days after the murder by U.S. Marshals and state parole agents who found him inside a Harrisburg apartment.

Authorities said Spriggs was developed as a suspect early in the investigation, and information indicated that he had fled the area shortly after the murder.

Beam was gunned down in the area of Franklin Street and Martin Avenue. Police said they are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
