MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -
Emergency management officials say the 96 new sirens around Three Mile Island sounded without problems during the first test of the new alert system Thursday.
Exelon Generation recently finished installing the new sirens in the 10-mile radius around the nuclear power plant and must now test the system to meet the requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The new sirens have improved sound coverage and a battery back-up to ensure they will able operate during a power outage.
A second three-minute test is scheduled in two weeks, on Thursday October 18 at 12:30 p.m.
On Thursday, November 1, emergency management agencies and TMI will conduct six separate tests, each for three minutes, beginning at 8 a.m.
The final test, a single three-minute test, is scheduled for Thursday, November 15 at 12:30 p.m.
The purpose of the sirens is to notify residents to tune into an Emergency Alert System radio or television station in case of an emergency at TMI, or tornadoes, floods, or other events requiring notification to residents.
