Fighting Cancer on a Wing and a Prayer

Posted: Updated:

For ten years, it's been Mickey Minnich's way of honoring his wife Vickie and her courageous battle with cancer. A chance for those touched by the disease to help others fight back.

Vickie's Angel Walk, a fund-raising effort named after Vickie Minnich and her love of angels, was launched by her husband Mickey and sons, Michael and Jason. Every year Mickey, himself, heads the walk, complete with angel wings and special angel shoes. Proceeds from the walk and other fund-raising events go directly to families fighting cancer to help with day to day living expenses.

"Let's make sure they don't lose their home. Let's make sure they have food to eat," says Minnich. Let's make sure they can heat their home. And make sure they can fix their car or co-pays."

Crystal and Troy Bennett of Newport call Vickie's Angel Walk an answer to prayers. With bills piling up from her colon cancer treatments, they worried for their daughters and keeping a roof over their heads.

Says Crystal, "They're just amazing. Just to provide that little bridge. Just that little help to get through the tough times."

The 38-year-old physical therapist assistant says the help with their mortgage allowed her to concentrate on getting well and returning to work.

Mickey calls his 37-year marriage to Vickie a blessing. A lifetime of sharing her kindness and love for others. He feels Vickie would be proud and humbled by the angel walk, and believes she's with them every step of the way.

"She didn't like the limelight. But I think she's behind me rooting 100 percent."

Out and About...where they're walking for love, faith and hope....I'm Chuck Rhodes for abc 27 News.

10th WALK is Saturday, October 13, 2012 at New Cumberland Borough Park.
