HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey Jr. has lost an 18-point advantage in his reelection bid and now leads Republican challenger Tom Smith by just three points, according to a new poll.

The Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday shows the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania is now too close to call. Casey leads Smith 48-45 percent compared to a 55-37 percent lead in the university's August 1 survey.

Smith, an Allegheny County businessman and political newcomer, spent millions of his own money on a recent television ad blitz to get name recognition.

Men now back the Republican 53-42 percent while women support Casey 53-38 percent. Independent voters are divided 44-44 percent.

The telephone survey of 1,519 likely voters in Pennsylvania was conducted October 12-14 and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.5 percent.
