CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -
Those who know it well, including Leslie Sterner, call the Carlisle Theatre a community fixture.
"If you are familiar with downtown Carlisle, the theater is a gem of downtown Carlisle," Sterner said.
Since 1939, the theatre has attracted families from around the area to watch films, plays, or concerts. It has a rich history in Cumberland County and countless fond memories that span over several generations.
Theater-goers can still enjoy classic movies in that classic 35 millimeter format.
"They like that feel, they like the sound of the 35 millimeter," said Sterner.
The problem is that nostalgic film is becoming more scarce and by 2013 won't be used anymore by film companies. Old theaters like the Carlisle will have to undergo a digital conversion to continue operating, a change that will cost nearly $200,000.
The Carlisle Theatre was recently approved for a capitol campaign. Supporters are hoping the community that loves spending time at the historic venue will be able to help support it.
