HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A bill that would name part of a Cumberland County highway in honor of a fallen Marine is headed to the desk of Governor Tom Corbett for his signature.

House Bill 2460 would designate a section of Route 233, from Newville to Route 11, as the Marine Lance Corporal Nicholas B. Morrison Memorial Highway. The legislation was passed on concurrence in the state House Wednesday and is expected to be signed into law.

Morrison, a 2000 graduate of Big Spring High School in Newville, was 23 years old when he died August 13, 2004 from a roadside bomb that struck his humvee while on patrol in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

The measure honoring Morrison was authored by state Representative Stephen Bloom, R-Cumberland.

"Corporal Morrison is a hero for those of us who live each day in the freedom he and his fellow servicemen and servicewomen have provided and protected," Bloom said in a news release. "This designation is a fitting tribute to acknowledge Corporal Morrison's service to our community and the ultimate sacrifice he made to protect our country."

Morrison was assigned to the Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

He was awarded the Purple Heart for his wounds sustained in combat against an enemy of the United States. He was also awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with the Combat V for his sustained and valorous actions in combat. He received the National Defense Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
