YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -
A York County community banded together Thursday to begin renovating the home of a wounded soldier.
Mathew Hanes received a helping hand Thursday from local contractors and third graders form York Haven Elementary. They wanted to show him that although he's done fighting, his sacrifice is not forgotten.
Hanes was critically wounded in Afghanistan and left paralyzed from the waist down. He is recuperating at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C.
Matthew's father, Lee, is heading the renovations to make sure that his son's house will be handicapped accessible and ready for his return.
Hanes attended school in the York area. The family has set up a fund in his name at M&T banks to help cover the costs of the renovation.
