2 charged in Chambersburg murder

Update at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday - Carl Varner, of 238 East McKinley Street, and Jason Shauf, of 117 Sollenberger Road, have each been charged has been first- and second-degree murder, robbery, burglary, and criminal conspiracy.

Each is being held in the Franklin County Prison without bail and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 30.


Update at 9:30 p.m. - According to two search warrants obtained Tuesday night by abc27, two men are in custody as prime suspects in the murder that occurred on East King Street Monday night. Police still have not released the name of the victim, pending next of kin.

The paperwork names 38-year-old Jason Shauf of Sollenberger Road, where the first standoff occurred, and 54-year-old Carl Varner of McKinley Street, where the second standoff occurred, as the two men who barged into the home armed with a rifle and a handgun.

The search warrants, which were filed by Chambersburg police, say Shauf and Varner entered the home and demanded to see "El Gallo." They then ordered the six people inside upstairs and divided them into two second floor bedrooms, where they "demanded money and personal property," witnesses told police.

At some point, Varner pulled out the handgun and fatally shot one of the victims, whose body "landed in the bathtub."

According to the court docket, Shauf was arraigned Tuesday night on seven felony counts, including first degree murder, robbery and conspiracy. Varner was still being processed when abc27 spoke with officials at the Franklin County Jail.


Update at 4:20 p.m. - A second police incident in the area of 2nd and McKinley streets in Chambersburg has ended. Two people have been taken into custody for questioning in the shooting death on East King Street.


Update at 3:40 p.m. - Authorities are asking some residents to leave the area of 2nd and McKinley streets in Chambersburg, where there is a second police incident connected to the shooting death on East King Street.

Other residents are being told to stay in their homes and to stay down.

Police said they are dealing with an active gunman.

One official told abc27 News that the incident could continue for several hours, and perhaps all night.


Update at 3:30 p.m. - A state police incident on Sollenberger Road in Hamilton Township has ended.


Update at 3:00 p.m. - Jeannie Flitner said Chambersburg officers are on the scene of a second police incident in the area of 2nd and McKinley streets. A state police spokesman said the incident also is connected to the shooting death on East King Street.


Update at 2:00 p.m. - Chambersburg Borough police issued a news release that said they were dispatched to the 300 block of East King Street for an assault shortly after 10 p.m. and located a witness who led them to 310 East King.

A Hispanic male located on the second floor was unconscious with no pulse, police said. Emergency responders contacted the coroner and it was eventually determined the victim had been shot.

Identification of the victim is pending the notification of his family.

Update at 1:20 p.m. - Jeannie Flitner reported that "bangs" came from a state police special response team breaking windows of the home as they prepared to make entry.


Update at 12:00 p.m. - abc27's Jeannie Flitner reported six smaller bangs could be heard and a fire truck has arrived at the scene.


Update at 11:40 a.m. - abc27's Jeannie Flitner reported from the scene that she heard a loud bang and saw smoke. Troopers armed with rifles could be seen around the home, and people who live in the area said police had advised them to go to their basements.


Update at 10:40 a.m. - Trooper Edward Asbury said state police have responded to the home on Sollenberger Road because authorities believe someone involved in the death in the 300 block of East King Street was staying there.

Police currently have reason to believe that someone is hiding inside the home.

Authorities have also confirmed that the death on East King Street was the result of a shooting and has been ruled a homicide.


Update at 9:20 a.m. - Police have responded to an incident on Sollenberger Road in Hamilton Township that could be related to the death investigation. Details were not immediately available.


Police are investigating a death in Franklin County.

Dispatchers said Chambersburg police were called to a home in the 300 block of East King Street for an assault around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

The coroner said a male victim was dead but deferred all other questions to police, who have not yet released any information about their investigation.

Police blocked off the street while they gathered evidence, including a large wooden door.

Investigators said they will release more information about the case Tuesday.
