HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
Harrisburg police have charged a man with reckless endangerment for a vehicle pursuit in the city and have arrested his passenger for firing a gun during a foot chase.
Carlos Smith, 27, was also charged with escape, fleeing and eluding, driving while under suspension, hindering apprehension, and several traffic offenses, according to police.
His passenger, 34-year-old James Porter, was additionally charged with aggravated assault, and drug and firearms offenses, police said.
Police said the incident began early Sunday in the 600 block of Maclay Street when the officer saw Smith driving at a high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the car but saw it again two hours later near North 6th and Maclay streets, where again the driver sped away.
The officer was able to stop the car in the 2100 block of Jefferson Street, but Smith and Porter defied orders to remain in the car. Porter picked up a revolver from the roadway and fled with the handgun, police said.
As Porter rounded a building, the officer heard a shot and stopped the foot chase. At the same time, Smith jumped in the car and fled, police said.
Police in neighboring Susquehanna Township eventually stopped Smith and took him into custody. Porter was arrested a short time later in an Uptown bar and was in possession of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, police said.
Both men were sent to the Dauphin County Prison in lieu of bail.
