FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. (WHTM) -
The Pennsylvania National Guard is sending nearly 400 troops to assist in disaster relief from Hurricane Sandy in the New York metropolitan region.
Saturday, approximately 30 members of the 328th Brigade Support Battalion, Alpha Company departed Lebanon for New Jersey. An additional six airmen from the 271st Combat Communication Squadron were set to leave Saturday evening as well.
On Sunday, approximately 350 troops will deploy from Fort Indiantown Gap and other locations in Pennsylvania and will travel to New York City. Those include members of the 228th Brigade Support Battalion, Alpha Company and the 28th Military Police unit.
"It's a very important mission. These soldiers are getting charged up -- PA soldiers," Major General Randy Marchi said. "They're looking forward to this important mission."
The missions are expected to last approximately 10 days depending on how fast power is restored, according to officials at Fort Indiantown Gap.
