YORK, Pa. (AP) - The attorney for a central Pennsylvania woman charged with murder in the shooting death of her boyfriend two years ago says his client loved the victim and fired because she thought he was an intruder.
Fifty-one-year-old JoAnn Helfrich is charged in York County with first- and third-degree murder in the October 2010 slaying of 59-year-old Fred McClure in York.
The York Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Qj1BiM ) says defense attorney Matthew Monaghan told jurors in his opening statement Monday that his client fired at "an intruder who made her fear for her life and was "visibly upset" when she found out it was McClure.
But chief deputy prosecutor Jennifer Russell said an autopsy indicates that the bullets that struck the victim had different trajectories. She said Helfrich's story makes "absolutely zero sense."
