Police: Cedar Cliff High School evacuated for 'unusual odor'

Posted: Updated:

Cedar Cliff High School in Cumberland County was evacuated and a staff member was transported to a hospital as a precaution Wednesday morning after an unusual odor in the building.

Lower Allen Township Police Chief Frank Williamson said the odor, thought to be sewer gas, was contained to an isolated rest room on the ground floor. He said firefighters checked the school for any volatile or toxic gases and none were found.

Students and staff who had evacuated to the front of the building were allowed to return to a cleared area, while others were moved to Highland Elementary until all areas of the high school building were checked, Williamson said.

The person transported to a hospital was one of two staff members who felt ill due to the odor, police said.

District spokesman Ryan Argot said students were evacuated from classrooms between 11:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. He said the building was determined to be safe for occupation and the remainder of the day went on as normal.

Argot said parents were notified of the incident via email and phone messages.
