York police seek to tackle both sides of prostitution

Posted: Updated:

Prostitution, like anything else, is a supply and demand issue.  And, here in York, the suppliers are only half the story.

Over the summer, abc27 worked with undercover police who explained just how widespread the issue has become.  Over the past five year, hundreds of arrests have been made, but now York police are focusing on the 'Johns.'

This week a sting operation nabbed five men.  It happened inside motel rooms on Route 30 after individuals responded to online ads written by undercover police posing as women.

"The prostitutes and the 'Johns,' they get smarter, they learn the tricks of the trade as far as to not get caught and our guys have to keep evolving," said Captain Ron Camacho of the York City Police Department.

This particular sting was orchestrated on a website called Backpage.com which operates like Craigslist except with an expanded adult section.
