Mistake on tax reminder causing confusion in Carlisle

Posted: Updated:
CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

There is truly a "taxing" issue in Carlisle -- since the borough's tax collector is facing criminal charges, there is some confusion over how residents should pay their taxes.

Some residents recently got a reminder that had some incorrect information on it.  The notice told residents to make their checks payable to George Hicks Junior, the man who was arrested in August for dealing drugs to an undercover police officer out of his tax office. After that, the court ordered Hicks stop receiving tax payments.

According to borough manager Matthew Candlend, the mistake on the mailer came from Cumberland County.  Although Hicks has been charged, he still technically holds the position until the court system decides his innocence or guilt.  However, he cannot process checks. So if you already wrote one in his name, it has probably been processed by the borough.

If you aren't sure, you can contact borough officials, Candelend said.

"Probably the biggest problem is it confused some people, but it doesn't affect whether we can process [the checks] or not," he explained.

Residents should make their checks payable to the Carlisle Borough, or may drop payments off in person at the Borough Hall at 53 W. South Street.  The phone number is 717-249-4422.
