MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A police officer who stopped to help an out-of-gas driver soon found it wasn't only the car that was running on fumes.

Upper Allen Township police said it soon became apparent that all five people in the car had been smoking marijuana.

The officer was traveling behind the group when they ran out of gas in the 2400 block of South Market Street and stopped to give them a hand.

Police ended up giving them a ride to the Cumberland County Booking Center, where they were processed and released.

The driver, 22-year-old George Z. Smith, of Oakland, N.J., was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance along with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, police said.

His passengers were each charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

Police identified them as Johnpaul I. Bertuglia, 20, of Simsbury, Conn.;  Christopher J. Bosch, 19, and Andrew B. Cortese, 20, both of Lancaster; and Joshua D. Taylor, 20, of Columbus, Ohio.
