A nine-hour standoff at the Hall Manor housing development in Harrisburg ended after the suspect was found dead, law enforcement officials announced just after 12 a.m. Tuesday.
Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico briefed the media after members of the CERT team discovered the man had died. He did not release a cause of death.
Earlier in the evening, sources confirmed a Harrisburg police officer with the CERT team, Kirk Aldrich, was shot once during the standoff. Aldrich sustained an injury to the hand and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.
Marsico said the incident was among the most dangerous for officers since the inception of the CERT team 20 years ago.
"Without a doubt, this was the most shots ever fired at our officers," Marsico said.
Sources told abc27 News the suspect inside the residence was 24-year-old Abel Roman of Philadelphia. One of our reporters on the scene, Megan Healey, was able to speak with Roman's sister, Kathy Roman, who said she is unaware of Roman being charged with any crimes. She said she was concerned about her brother and was learning information about the standoff through social media.
Our coverage team has reported dozens of shots have been fired at the residence. Reporter Dan Carrigan said people in the neighborhood were not allowed to return home during the incident.
Earlier in the afternoon, police arrived at the scene and the suspect fired a shot before threatening to kill himself, officers said. In response, they evacuated parts of Hall Manor with the assistance of the Harrisburg Housing Authority.
It is unclear what type of crime police believe Roman was involved in, although sources told abc27 News earlier in the day that the suspect was involved in a homicide. There are currently three unsolved homicides in the Harrisburg area, including Saturday's shooting that resulted in the death of 27-year-old Dion Britton.
Neighbors stated that police arrived at Hall Manor between 2:30 and 3 p.m. to serve a warrant, and that is when the incident started. Foose Elementary School is located next door, and children were walking home at the time that the standoff began.
