Police seek driver in hit-and-run pedestrian crash

Posted: Updated:
CAMP HILL, Pa. (WHTM) -

Police are looking for the driver who struck a pedestrian in Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County and failed to stop.

Township Police Chief Frank Williamson said the incident happened at around 4:15 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Hummel Avenue and 18th Street.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, was crossing Hummel Avenue from the north to the south side and had the green signal to cross when he was hit in the eastbound lane, Williamson said.

The pedestrian saw the vehicle coming and jumped at the last minute, landing on the hood and windshield. He told police the windshield did not shatter.

Police said the driver braked after striking the man, but never stopped and continued east on Hummel Avenue toward Lemoyne.

Numerous passersby stopped to help the victim, but no one called police, Williamson said. The victim, a township resident, walked home before calling police.

The car was described as a red or maroon vehicle, possibly a smaller station wagon model of a Ford.

Williamson said the pedestrian was dressed in darker clothing and weather conditions may have contributed to the driver of the vehicle not seeing him in time to stop.

Lower Allen Township police are asking for the people who stopped to check on the victim, those who may have seen the accident, or the driver or a passenger in the striking vehicle to call them at 717-238-9676.
