One dead after police-involved shooting in York Co.

Police have released the name of the suspect in a police-involved shooting at the Kmart in Springettsbury Township, York County.

Officers said 40-year-old Todd William Shultz was carrying a knife while trying to steal jewelry from Kmart just before 7 p.m. on Dec. 29. Security officers at Kmart saw Shultz and called 911.

Springettsbury Township police chief Thomas Hyers said that when police arrived, they found Shultz outside the store with a knife. Police tasered Shultz, but he got back up and approached the officers, knife in hand. Hyers said Shultz made threats to others in the store as well.

Two officers then shot Shultz, who was transported to the hospital. Shultz later died. No one else was injured.

The investigation is ongoing, and since it was a police-involved shooting, state police and the district attorney will decide whether or not the shooting was justified.

Hyers said he has seen the surveillance video, and he believes his officers did the right thing.

"These officers had a matter of five, six, seven seconds. I'm extremely proud of them, and I'm concerned for them. We'll make sure we take care of them and their families going forward," Hyers said.

The involved officers will be placed on leave, pending the investigation.
