HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
The wheels of a Harrisburg trash hauler became stuck in a small sinkhole Monday morning.
City spokesman Robert Philbin said the six-ton city trash truck was on a scheduled pick-up when the rear wheels collapsed into the hole near North 4th and Maclay Streets at around 7:30 a.m. Monday.
North 4th Street was closed between Maclay and Woodbine streets while the truck was lifted by a crane and the sinkhole was filled. The truck was removed at 3:30 p.m.
Philbin said the incident was apparently caused by soil erosion beneath the street surface resulting from a damaged water pipe connection.
He said the break could result in an increased risk of microbial contamination to residents in the neighborhood. Affected residents were notified door-to-door to boil their drinking water.
Philbin said work at the site will continue throughout the night. Water and gas services have been shut off during the repair.
