Lynchburg, VA- With the new year comes many new things, including, new life. Tuesday we got to meet the first Lynchburg baby born in 2013.
Little Karis Sing-Un Wu was born around four Tuesday morning at Virginia Baptist Hospital, to pleasantly surprised parents.
"We weren't thinking she was going to be the first baby of the New Year," said Tracy Wu, Karis' mother.
"There was the vague possibility in the back of my mind but not really hoping on it," said Darren Wu, Karis' father.
Tracy and Darren knew their due date was January first, but they weren't banking on it. They were actually hoping for a 2012 baby for tax credits, but baby Karis stuck to her schedule.
"I got up in the morning and went for a three-mile walk, and just like all day was trying to get things going. And then around ten o'clock last night we were like, well, don't think it's going to happen," said Tracy.
Then during the night, Karis decided to make her appearance. When the Wu's arrived at the hospital, nurses told them they were in the running for first baby of the year.
"The nurse mentioned--you might have the first baby of the year. And so in the back of my mind I was like, oh that would be cool, that's exciting. But that wasn't really the main, you know, I was just really more, I was in labor and thinking about her," said Tracy.
But seven pound, four ounce Karis claimed the prize, and earned a prize for her parents.
"It's great because it's a first day, new year, new beginnings, and it's a new life in our family," said Darren.
It's a life that will be celebrated in style, every single year.
"We saw fireworks on the way here and we can always say that the whole world's celebrating her birth," said Darren.
And to top it all off, the Wu's best friends also had a baby Monday night. It was the last baby born in Lynchburg in 2012.
