Richmond, VA - New numbers from the Virginia State Police Department show gun sales in Virginia went up last year and set a record high.
Their statistics on the mandatory criminal-background checks run on gun buyers show there were 432,387 gun transactions in 2012. That's a 35 % increase from 2011 and the largest year-to-year increase in 20 years.
Industry leaders say the summer repeal of the state's one-handgun-per-month law is one reason for the jump. Another is concerns about gun restrictions following the Newtown shooting.
Not all checks represent the sale of a gun, as some customers buy multiple firearms and other checks involve people reclaiming firearms that had been pawned. Exact sales figures aren't recorded in Virginia.
