Mayor projects Harrisburg's debt will be erased this year

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson says the $340 million debt incurred by the city's trash incinerator is expected to be wiped out this year.

Thompson said Monday that a deal to sell the incinerator and the city's parking garages are expected to be finalized in the coming months.

She said a number of other factors, along with the state chipping in more money, should help erase Harrisburg's debt.

"We're working very hard to make sure the city is made whole and there will be no more burden on the taxpayers moving forward," Thompson said.

Thompson said the city's fiscal recovery plan is ahead of schedule. The state-approved plan initially projected improvements in 2015.
