GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
An Adams County man will spend life in prison without the possibility of parole plus a consecutive sentence of up to 20 years for sexually assaulting and fatally beating his 64-year-old aunt inside her McSherrystown home.
Jonathan Leonard, 26, also of McSherrystown, received the sentence Tuesday after he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of first-degree murder and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, according to Adams County First Assistant District Attorney Brian Sinnett.
All other charges were withdrawn.
Leonard on the evening of April 9 went into Christiana Leonard's home and beat her about the head and body with his hands and objects he found in the home and strangled her.
He then stole several pieces of jewelry and her car before selling the jewelry at a Hanover pawn shop.
Sinnett said that while Leonard pleaded guilty but mentally ill, he accepted full responsibility for the brutal murder and sexual offense and was sentenced exactly as he would have been convicted at trial.
