Halifax Regional Hospital Uses New Stent

Posted:

South Boston, VA - A Hospital on the Southside has made history. Halifax Regional Hospital is the first hospital in Virginia to use a new type of heart stent.

It's called the Xpedition drug eluding stent, just approved by the FDA last week.

It has been distributed to hospitals all over the nation and Halifax Regional has already used it twice. The stent is used to treat acute heart attacks, and one of the cardiologists there says it works better than previous stents.

"The stent proved itself. This third generation stent seems to perform very well. We had an excellent result, the patient is doing very well and that's what matters at the end of the day," said Dr. Janardhan Srinivasan.

According to Halifax Regional, the only other places these new stents have been used are in Maryland and Washington, DC.
