STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) - The trial of a former Pennsylvania pastor charged with killing his second wife resumes Tuesday morning in the Poconos.
Prosecutors say Arthur Schirmer hit his wife over the head with a blunt object, then staged a car crash in an attempt to conceal the crime. Betty Schirmer died in July 2008.
Local authorities initially treated the case as a straightforward car crash, but state police became involved several months later when a member of Schirmer's congregation committed suicide in the church office. Authorities say the man had learned Schirmer was in a relationship with the congregant's wife, the church secretary.
The suicidal man's daughter testified Monday. Samantha Musante says her father was "heartbroken" over the affair.
Schirmer is charged separately with killing his first wife in 1999.
