Roanoke, VA - The National Weather Service has now expanded the Flood Watch that was only in effect for southwest sections of the ABC 13 viewing area to include most of the New River Valley, Franklin County and Roanoke.
The Flood Watch was issued after some areas picked up a quick three inches of rain Monday night into Tuesday morning.
With more heavy rain on the way, the watch has been expanded to include a broader area.
"Tuesday morning area streams were rising, many of which were half bank full. These streams will continue to rise and may begin to flood this afternoon or tonight. Significant rises are also expected on area rivers over the next 24 hours," a statement from National Weather Service office in Blacksburg said Tuesday afternoon.
Lynchburg, VA – After weeks, even months, of dry conditions across the ABC 13 viewing area, rainfall continues to fall heavy at times Tuesday.
Already, our viewers report up to three inches of rain near Danville. The graphic represents the official rainfall totals as of noon Tuesday. Amounts vary depending on your exact location.
A Flood Watch was issued Tuesday morning for Henry County and the southern New River Valley as a result of the rain that has already fallen, and the expectation of additional heavy downpours into Tuesday Night.
Despite a drought, rainfall rates can lead to minor flooding in urban areas and flooding of smaller streams and creeks.
""While some flooding is possible, especially across southwest Virginia, overall this has been much needed soaking rain after a very dry end to 2012," said ABC 13 Meteorologist Matt Ferguson.
The rain comes after the southern branch of the jet stream finally opened moisture up from the Gulf of Mexico.
A stalled front is allowing not just one, but several waves of heavier rain to fall.
You can track the rain throughout the day, along with zoomed-in radar images of selected areas, by visiting the ABC 13 Weather Page.
