The bitter cold didn't stop a large crowd from gathering in downtown State College on Tuesday night. With the temperature falling to single digits, some Penn State proud bundled up for a candlelight vigil that marked the one year anniversary of Joe Paterno's death.
Around 7 p.m. hundreds of luminaries were lit at the base of the "Inspiration Mural" on Heister Street. The mural still features a portrait of Paterno.
Inspiration Way, the group that orchestrated the event, planned to have 409 candles, one for each of Paterno's wins before the NCAA sanctions stripped him of 111 victories.
Students, alumni and university supporters alike showed up to the vigil.
"Paying respects to a great man on a very sad day," mural artist and organizer Michael Pilato said.
Paterno died of lung cancer at the age of 85.
