Danville, VA - A lot of people in Danville woke up Wednesday morning in the dark and cold.
According to Danville Utilities, a power substation failed and more than 1,200 customers lost power. But after several hours of work, they say all power has now been restored.
Officials say the power went out right around 3 a.m. as temperatures dipped near the 20 degree mark. As soon as the lights went out, Danville Utilities had all hands on deck as they tried to restore power to the affected area, which included downtown and parts of Route 58 East.
As a result, Danville City Schools made the call to close two schools for the day: E.A. Gibson Middle and Glenwood Elementary.
But as of 8:45 a.m., the power was back on.
Utilities Director Steve Saum said while the cold weather played a part in the outage, a failing piece of equipment was mainly to blame.
"It doesn't happen very often, but equipment is equipment, and we do have failures in pieces of equipment, and this is a major failure here," said Steve Saum - Director, Danville Utilities.
With power being out, staying warm was a big concern in this frigid weather.
Danville city officials had set up a warming shelter at the Salvation Army on Henry Street, and officials in Pittsylvania County set up a shelter in Ringgold.
