Carlisle teacher on unpaid leave following fire incident

Posted: Updated:
CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Carlisle Middle School science teacher has been placed on unpaid leave following a November incident in his classroom that burned five students and sent two more to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Teacher James Redington was place on paid administrative leave two days after the incident. The Carlisle school board last week voted to change the administrative leave from paid to unpaid.

The vote came while school officials still wait on the report from Carlisle Fire & Rescue Fire Chief John Heberlig. Heberlig said he turned over his report to Carlisle Fire Chief Tom Murray and Carlisle Borough Solicitor Keith Brenneman for approval and hasn't heard back on the report. Murray said all comments about the report must come from Brenneman.

Brenneman did not return calls for comment Tuesday.

Preliminary information indicates that the science experiment involved rubbing alcohol and fire, but the final report will describe what happened in the classroom that day.
