HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Midstate students gathered at the State Museum in Harrisburg for the eighth annual Future City competition on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Thirty teams from various junior high schools in the area designed and built floor models of futuristic cities of tomorrow.

The competition was designed to enhance the students' abilities to apply math and science to real world issues, develop teamwork and problem solving skills, and learn how communities and cities function.

Bill Sutton, founder of Future City, believes that the competition is a developmental process. "What we try to do is encourage the students learn from the sixth grade, and they get better, and they come back as a seventh grader, and then eventually as an eighth grader, and continue to improve on the competition."

The winners of the competition will then head to the national finals in Washington, D.C. next month.
