Amtrak route from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh may end

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Amtrak route from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh may be discontinued later this year. The state has until October to decide if it's going to subsidize the service.

Amtrak currently pays nearly 6 million dollars for the route. However the federal Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 will soon kick in, which requires the company to share costs with states on routes of 750 miles or shorter.

PennDOT currently spends nearly 9 million dollars to subsidize the service between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. That route services 14 trips daily.

The Pittsburgh to Harrisburg route has one trip in each direction per day.

If the state decides not to subsidize the line, it's likely it will be dropped unless Amtrak or another entity decides to step in and make the payment.
