State police are investigating an incident in which a man punched a woman in the face, then tried to commit suicide by cutting off his hand with an electric saw.
Officers reported that 56-year-old David T. Allwein of Myerstown punched the 58-year-old woman in the face during an argument at their home.
After the assault, which resulted in a broken jaw and other head injuries, Allwein left the residence and went to his garage where he tried to commit suicide. He severed his left hand with an electric saw.
Troopers found him on the garage floor. EMS was called, and Allwein was taken to Reading Hospital for his injuries. He was later flown to Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.
The victim was taken to Lebanon Good Samaritan Hospital.
Allwein was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.
