Random drug searches approved for Cumberland Valley

Posted: Updated:
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Cumberland Valley School Board has approved a new policy that will allow random drug searches of students' vehicles parked on the school campus.

"The concern is that the contraband within the building is now moving out into the parking lots.
This policy is a deterrent," said Tracy Panzer, CV spokeswoman.

Panzer says the School Board's Policy Committee has been discussing the idea over the last year, and the board passed the policy change Monday night. It will allow random K9 drug searches of student vehicles.

"The search truly has to be random. Whether it be a lottery drawing based on parking pass numbers or a certain section of the parking lot. It truly will be a random search.," said Panzer. "If a search were to occur we would also notify parents like we do for lockers searches when the search is about to happen."

Students pay for parking permits at the beginning of the year and are assigned parking spots.

The district is working with local law enforcement and the Cumberland County Drug Task Force.
