EPHRATA, Pa. (WHTM) -

A fatal crash closed a section of Route 222 North in Lancaster County for more than three hours Thursday morning.

West Earl Township police said 36-year-old Victor M. Stimmell, of Lititz, was driving a Ford 500 that crossed the median from the southbound lanes and struck a Ford Ranger pickup truck head-on in the northbound lanes just north of the Peach Road overpass at around 7 a.m.

Stimmell was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, 61-year-old Leverne Smith, of Reading, was transported to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash after being freed from the vehicle by rescue personnel.

Route 222 North was closed from Route 772 to Route 322 in Ephrata Township until 10:30 a.m. so that the vehicles and debris could be removed from the roadway.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the events prior to the crash is asked to call the West Earl Township Police Department at 717-859-1411.

A second crash closed the southbound lanes of Route 322 in Ephrata Township at around 10:15 a.m. The south lanes reopened in the afternoon.

No injuries were reported in that crash.
