NEW FREEDOM, Pa. (WHTM) -

Charges are pending against a man who allegedly stole a donation jar with money that was supposed to go toward American troops serving overseas.

Southern York County Regional police said the alleged thief was identified Thursday shortly after they released a surveillance photo to news media.

The name of the suspect was not immediately released.

The donation jar had been placed in the Rutter's store in New Freedom to collect donations for SOAR (Support Our American Recruits), a charity that sends care packages to local troops stationed abroad.

Police said on the night of January 23, the man in the photo exited the passenger side of a light colored minivan and went into the Rutter's to return two packs of cigarettes.

While the clerk was distracted, police said the thief placed the donation jar under his jacket and walked out.
