Corbett announces resignation of Welfare chief

Governor Tom Corbett announced Friday that his secretary of public welfare is leaving the job.

Corbett said Gary Alexander is leaving state government to pursue unspecified opportunities in the private sector and to spend more time with his wife and children in Rhode Island.

His last day will be February 15.

Alexander said Tuesday that he was leaving, but that he hadn't given the governor a letter of resignation or set a date.

The online news site Pennsylvania Independent in December reported that Alexander was still living in Rhode Island nearly two years after joining Corbett's administration.

The Independent said state-filed reports indicated Alexander drove more than 41,000 miles in state-owned vehicles from July 2011 through June 2012, including more than 21,000 miles of "commute" trips.

Bev Mackereth, a former state representative from York County, will serve as acting secretary.

Mackereth has served as the department's deputy secretary for the Office of Children, Youth and Families since November 2011.
