Harrisburg police have made an arrest in the city's first homicide of 2013.

Maurice Belton Jr., 20, has been charged with criminal homicide and other offenses related to the shooting death Sunday night of 21-year-old Davion Walker.

Officers were called to Belton's home in the 1300 block of North 15th Street around 10:40 p.m. for a report that a man had been shot.

The officers were met by Belton, who took them to Walker's body at the bottom of the basement steps. Walker, a Midtown resident, had been shot once in the chest, police said.

Belton told the officers he was showing a handgun to Walker and didn't realize it was loaded. He said he pointed the gun at Walker and pulled the trigger, according to police.

Walker collapsed and Belton got his mother for help, police said.

The handgun in the incident was determined to have been reported stolen. A small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia was found in Belton's room, police said.

In addition to criminal homicide, Belton was charged with tampering with evidence, receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Belton was sent to the Dauphin County Prison without bail. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for February 21.
