A Dauphin man facing prison time shot himself in the arm during a short standoff with state police Monday morning.
Alan Shearer, 55, was transported to Penn State Hershey Medical Center following the incident at his home in the 200 block of Erie Street, Trooper Robert Hicks said.
Troopers had responded to the home at around 6:30 a.m. after a 911 call from Shearer's wife. The troopers were able to remove the woman from the home, but Shearer refused to leave, Hicks said.
After about 45 minutes, the troopers heard a gunshot and found Shearer had shot himself in the upper arm, according to police.
He was conscious and alert when troopers got to him. He told them he accidentally shot himself, Hicks said.
Shearer was due to be sentenced in York County court for burglary charges.
His wife called 911 after Shearer told her he didn't want to go to jail and grabbed at .30-30 rifle, police said.
