NEWVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) -
A malfunctioning wood stove sparked a fire Tuesday night that destroyed a home near Newville, according to fire officials.
The couple who lived in the single-story home at 515 Shed Road in Lower Mifflin Township discovered the fire at around 10:30 p.m. when they were awakened by a smoke alarm, officials said.
One of the residents tried to put out the fire himself with two extinguishers, but was unsuccessful. Both residents then fled the house and called 911.
The fire destroyed most of the couple's belongings, along with two vehicles.
The American Red Cross is assisting them with food and clothing, and the two will be staying with family members in the Newville area. No injuries were reported.
Seven volunteer fire companies responded to the scene.
Fire officials had previously believed the fire was caused by warm ashes from the wood stove that had been placed in a trash can on an outdoor carport.
