No students were injured when their school bus caught fire Wednesday morning in southern York County.

State police in York said the fire started in the rear of the bus, which was carrying 40 students to Friendship Elementary School in the Southern York County School District.

Someone following the bus noticed the smoke and alerted the driver, who pulled over along Jefferson Road near the intersection of Tannery Road in Codorus Township and instructed the students to exit, police said.

The bus was destroyed by the fire and was towed from the scene.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
