Pa. bill would give tax break to firefighters

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Pennsylvania lawmaker has introduced legislation to help firefighters pay for the gear they purchase themselves.

Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Cambria, said his measure would exempt firefighters from paying the state's 6 percent sales tax on personal purchases of firefighting equipment.

Haluska said fire departments are already exempt from paying sales tax on purchases made for the department, and individual firefighters should receive the same exemption when they purchase their own helmets, suits and other equipment.

His legislation, House Bill 574, has been referred to the House Finance Committee for consideration.
