Taylor Farms announces baby spinach recall in Pa.

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Taylor Farms Retail Inc. announced online that it was issuing a voluntary recall of certain organic baby spinach products due to possible contamination with E. coli.

The company reported that the bacteria strain that may have contaminated their spinach was Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) which can cause severe infection with side effects including severe abdominal cramps and vomiting.

It can also cause kidney failure and nervous system problems, especially in children and the elderly.

The recalled spinach is being sold in 39 states including Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland.

The spinach comes in 5 ounce and 16 ounce trays under the following names: Marketside Organics, Full Circle Organics, Central Market Organics, Simple Truth Organics and Taylor Farms Organic.

Taylor Farms reported that all the spinach in question has a "best by" date of February 24, 2013.

The company said that the recall was a "precautionary measure," and anyone who has the spinach should throw it away.

Last year the company voluntarily recalled its organic baby spinach after a test found there was a potential of salmonella contamination. They also recalled a bag of salad greens in 2011 for the same reason.

Taylor Farms can be reached at 855-293-9811.
