Homicide fugitive arrested in York drug sweep

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

A massive drug sweep in York this month resulted in the arrest of a man wanted on homicide charges in Puerto Rico, state police announced Friday.

Eli Samuel Diaz-Morciglio, 21, was arrested for possession with intent to distribute heroin during a Feb. 6 drug sweep dubbed Operation Sunrise, and was being held in the York County Prison on $80,000 bail when authorities learned his true identity this week, police said.

State police on Feb. 18 received an anonymous tip through the Crime Stoppers hotline that 23-year-old Emmanuel Martinez-Vargas was in the York area and was wanted for a 2011 homicide in San Juan.

A photograph of Martinez-Vargas was obtained by the U.S. Marshall Service, and members of the Pennsylvania State Police Troop H, Vice Unit recognized him as the man jailed under the name of Diaz-Morciglio, police said.

After Diaz-Morciglio was shown the photograph, he admitted he was Martinez-Vargas and had been living in York for 18 months as Diaz-Morciglio, police said.

Martinez-Vargas will be charged as a fugitive from justice. Police said he will also have his drug charges amended to include false reports and will be held in the York County Prison until his extradition to Puerto Rico on the homicide charges.
