Are the sequester's defense cuts all bad?

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The sequestration would hit the midstate hard. Defense spending cuts could bring budget breaking furloughs to families who can't handle the hit.

Leaders at Fort Indiantown Gap say the cuts would even hurt Pennsylvania National Guard response times for natural disasters.

But not everyone agrees cutting defense spending is bad.

Tad DeHaven is a budget analyst with Cato, a Libertarian think tank based in Washington, D.C. DeHaven admits sequestration isn't the best way to make cuts. However, he adds, defense cuts need to be made.

"We are spending close to a trillion dollars and that's an exorbitant sum and spending has gone through the roof in the past decade," DeHaven said.

He believes that the short-term financial pain that could be felt by department of defense workers in our area, will pay off in the long run.

"We have to look at the big picture. Certainly people are going to be affected, people are going to hurt but if we don't get federal spending under control its not going to be military families its going to be all of us," Dehaven said.
