Hershey business leader had help reaching sweet success

Posted: Updated:

Jim Nevels grew up in Greensboro, Alabama and realized early on that hard work would be the only way to achieve success.

Nevels said he remembers when he was 5-years-old that he extended his hand to a man who was reading the water meter at his home. Nevels says the man was taken back by the gesture and told him that he would never amount to anything.

Nevels is the Hershey Company's chairman of the board. He says others have had a great impact on his life, including his family. His father told him before he died not to mess up the opportunity with Hershey.

Nevels will never forget the impact made on him by the bus driver who dropped him off at his dormitory on the campus of Bucknell University back in 1970. The driver told him to sit in the front of the bus, which meant a lot to someone who grew up in the Deep South. Nevels says the driver helped him carry his belongings to his room and gave him $10. Nevels said they stayed in contact over the years until he passed away a few years ago.

Nevels says it's an honor to be the chairman of the board and a privilege to serve with the 13,000 employees who work for the company.
